Hello,
I'm new here. Found you on an extended (three hours!) search for what I think is an O.Henry short story. I think the story was titled, "The Sham," and it was about people who made being burglarized a status symbol. The robber took valuables away in a pillow case. One of the couples in the story packed up a bunch of worthless stuff and invited the burglar to burglarize them, too.
Does that ring any bells?
There's an art copyright lawsuit going on, a new one against Richard Price. He takes pictures of other people's photography, puts it on canvas without permission or attribution and sells it for $100K/canvas. He won an earlier lawsuit on the grounds that his handling constituted a transformation, so it wasn't infringement. I wanted to make the point that suing him probably isn't going to make him stop and probably will make his name on a canvas more attractive than ever - he has a claque of enthusiastic collectors who probably enjoy being in on the controversy. It reminds me of what I think is an O.Henry story that I read in high school - a while ago!
