Who were these fellows so finely wrought
Whose figures survived time's hellish onslaught
Of vandals and earthquakes and ships lost at sea
To give placarded joy to middle-class you and me?
Each curl of hair and curve of cheek
Is sensually stiffened; the runner's sleek
Pose and the statesman's hard glare
Have become solid scraps of antiquity-ware.
Such everyday gestures metallified
Are models of mortal men deified.
We inspect, we feel we are almost like them,
Though our bodies lack similar tenacity of stem
And incalculable grace—an athletic comportment
That pervades each piece in the whole assortment.
Most who file by these Hellenistic beauties
Are charmed by endurance of limbs and patooties;
But some focus solely on cosmetic warts,
And sneer at the tidbitty private parts.
