Hi Everybody!
I'm new to this forum and this is my first thread!
I joined because I'm designing a game with the 9 layers of Hell and when reading through I found that the 9th and final layer is separated into 4 Rounds.
Can somebody describe to me what a Round is exactly?
I've scoured the internet trying to find out what it might be but I don't think search engines are articulate enough to lead me towards the answer... that or i'm just overthinking the definition :p
Either way, I hope to hear from you all soon!
*I was reading through Dante's Inferno... I guess it would've help if I had said that earlier :p*

You might find helpful Barry Moser's depiction of Dante's hell, as shown on this page:

(Also, you might consider "round" in this context to be the equivalent of the French "arrondissement." If you check out the meaning of arrondissement, you will find that the word "exactly" does not really apply. If you, for the purposes of your game, chose to arrange your rounds as segments of a pie or like the circles on an archery target or as layers in a cake, no-one could say that you were wrong.)

Thank you, Whifflingpin! That definitely clears up the confusion!
The game I'm working on is a 2D Platformer... for example the Super Mario games for Nintendo or Super Nintendo.
Also, the game begins at the 9th circle of Hell and the protagonist will need to climb up from there.
So I'm thinking of combining Mr. Moser's depiction with your archery target example, so the player will have to ascend from the bottom to reach the top.
The only thing i'm afraid of is the game will start representing hell in layers (with the player climbing towards the top) instead of circles per se. But i'll cross that bridge when i get to it i suppose.
Thanks again!

I know nothing of games on any platform, but I think the "circles" could well be stacked as layers, with the player having to climb to the top. If the "rounds" were arranged like pie segments, then the rounds in the circle could be visited in any order. You could then have user choice of route within a circle, but a requirement to prove oneself undeserving of imprisonment in each round before climbing up to the next circle. The lower the circle, the more vile the sin, but within any circle containing rounds the various sins are equally vile.
