i think Far from the Madding Crowd is a great book. The first chapter especially is very well written, in a way that it makes you want to find out more about the mysterious girl on the wagon (Bathsheba). It also has a feeling to it that the paths of her and Gabriel Oak will cross again, which makes you want to keep reading to find out more. <br> This is not a modern book (obviously), and i think that it is looked at from the wrong angle by some readers. It is not supposed to be a fast moving novel, with all the events squashed into 100 pages. It has beautiful imagery and descriptions of the actions and setting, which makes it much easier to imagine and follow. i love how the characters are realistic - they all have faults, as well as basic human compassion and love, which i think is really important to have. i recomend this book for anyone who likes a good story :)
