I agree. Thomas Hardy is absolutely a wonderfully, detailed writer. I love classice works of his type. I put his work in the same sphere with Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" and the more quiet "Jane Eyre" but still intense all the same. As with the work of the Bronte classics, his work has intense psychological impact, and one can sense the very thoughts and feelings of the characters in great depth and detail. Add to this, the descriptive surroundings of the pure, unspoiled English countryside and one feels like an observer watching from afar the scene as it unravels.

I saw the movie with Alan Bates, which was wonderful, but it was not true in detail to the book itself. The book was absolutely fantastic! I loved every bit of the story.

If only we could have writers like Mr. Hardy, Louis Gaston (Phantom of the Opera), and the Brontes in our time writing out new fascinating novels. If only.

This book is one of the best novels I have read for a while and therefore I decided to write about it in my A level coursework. I compared the book with Atwood's dystopian novel "The Handmaid's Tale" and focused on male roles in the two societies. The passion and character portrayed in each of these males is something to be admired and in studying it I have learnt a lot about not only the characters but a about society at the times of the novels. Thomas Hardy to me is a brilliant writer.
