God, I hate my job
on top of the world
looking over the edge

I see them coming
children and fools
I hear shuffling feet
some tumbling, some hobbling
smell the reek of hope and faith
they expect rivers of wine
trees bearing cakes, smiles of love
chiefly they expect to get in

Expressionless I stand
spit a “Wrong spot, try again next door!”
or “You can’t enter—private party!”
some are intractable
and get themselves into a state
“Listen, angel, we booked in
a life-time ago!”
I simply sneer and tell them
that they should have taken
the Gold Member Card

I don’t get it
why people never read
the legal notices
in five point Helvetica Condensed font

From time to time
I beckon them to step aside
because I have to welcome
some apathetic, glutted VIP
in a slim-lined limousine
with tinted windows
who mutters “Surely overrated”
or drawls “Only three stars
from the Hiltons
on the ParadiseAdvisor App”

Eventually the others
just shuffle away
maybe they go back
to haunt some stony
Transylvanian stronghold
or some drafty castle
near a Loch

Or maybe they continue to be of use
turning into black matter
and holding in this way
the whole slipshod universe
together

I really liked this - it grabbed me right from the first stanza. And that last stanza is a real belter too.

Did you really mean "tainted Windows"? :)

Loved this: "five point Helvetica Condensed font" Must have been lawyer writ.

Interesting. I remember a story my Mother told me a few months before she died about when she immigrated to America (USA) from England after WW!! ended. Her family was put up in an hotel in New York City, and after they had settled their meager belongings in their room they went to a buffet the hotel offered. She told me she'd never seen so much food in her life. She died an illegal alien ironically. (Happy Birthday Mum!)

Ta ! (short for tarradiddle),

Golly, I did check and re-check, and those "tainted" windows passed me by… will change'em to tinted right away :-)

I like the idea of thinking about St Peter as a bouncer. I wonder why there's a metaphorical gate there at all?

extend your emotion extend more likely it comes hitting over the curved string as an ocean severely floating around a big land then float rising drowning up the nakedly feet.
really I enjoyed on your poetry
best wishes

@YesNo, of course there has to be a gate—how would they otherwise separate the worthy from the unworthy? As for St Peter, well, it's actually the archangel Michael in my poem (whom I chose according to the scriptures, but please, don't ask me which part, because I had that intuition, then googled it, found out I had been right... and forgot at once where I had found the reference. google still knows, I'm sure, lol)
@Mohammad, I'm really glad you liked this :-) Best wishes to you, too!
