1984 was a gripping, exciting, and disturbing dystopia. Many of the frightening warnings in 1984 are becoming increasingly relevant as time rolls on, with constant surveillance and the new purpose of war being two of them. It is because of this that everybody should read 1984, and I think it is even more important that high school aged students read it. The future of our country lies with the youth, so it is crucial for them to recognize the dangers of totalitarianism. 1984 is a powerful book that carries a powerful message, and its message should not be ignored. With the increasing relevance of 1984, it is becoming more important than ever that we read this book. It opens up our eyes to our country's possible future, and I think most people would agree that we don't want to end up like Oceania. George Orwell was brilliant in the way that he wrote this book, and has been successful in changing many people's- as well as my own- views on modern day issues such as surveillance and privacy. Overall, I think 1984 was a fantastically powerful and disturbing book.

I agree with you 100%. This was an amazing read that kept me on my toes the entire time. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys novels that make quick turns in new directions. In a different standpoint, it is of dire importance that the youth educate themselves with this book because as time goes on, 1984 becomes more and more of a reality. Security and privacy become of less and less importance to the government. While the government says they care about the safety of the citizens, it simply becomes easier to govern and control us. With the next generation becoming knowledgeable on politics and Orwellian philosophy, we can prevent a totalitarian government in our lives and protect our basic rights.

Yes, I agree, though some may find 1984 an unsuitable book for high school students due to certain questionable moments. But the overall message of the book is necessary, or should be, for all students to learn and have knowledge of, especially, as you said, because of its increasing relevance to today. And, should its relevancy increase, it should be even more thoroughly taught and studied. 1984 may seem boring to some due to its lack of emotion, but it is an amazing book and it's message should be held in mind as we look at society today, unless, as you previously mentioned, we wish to become like Oceania.
