The First Patrol

Ernie was so excited he was bouncing on his toes. His first real job! First day as a police officer. First patrol. He breathed deeply. He’s known all his life that this is exactly what he wanted to do – serve and protect. He touched his badge reverently, then his service gun. He was prepared. A not so gentle punch to his right shoulder brought him back from his musings. He turned around and faced his first partner, officer Roy Jerkings. Said partner was scowling deeply.
“Move your butt, Ernest! We’ve not all day.”
“Yeah, right…I was just…”
“Masturbating to your pretty new badge and uniform, I’ve noticed.” Interrupted the older officer derisively. Then he brought his still scowling face so close to Ernie’s that the latter smelled stale beer and garlic from the other man’s breath. “I’ll say this only once and you better get it into your thick skull, your hear me?” He said, putting weight into each word.
Ernie, for the first time since he’s left the Academy, felt a bit out of his skin. He nodded quickly, prepared to hear and remember each and every word coming out of his older partner’s mouth.
“Great.” The older man stabbed a finger sharply into Ernie’s chest and brought his face even closer to Ernie’s. To passersby’s, it must’ve looked like one police officer was about to bite the nose off another. “So, rookie, you do what I say, without question. I say jump, you jump. I say go stay at the corner and you better be there when I return or I’ll kick your green butt so hard you’ll cry for mommy, got it in one?”
“I’ve got it, Roy.” Whispered Ernie, scared out of his wits but proud his voice hasn’t betrayed him.
“And,” continued the older officer, smiling a toothy smile, “most importantly, you don’t do anything except for what I tell you. No bright ideas of your own, got it?”
Ernie, whom that smile scared more than anything else, nodded frantically once, twice, thrice before he managed to stop himself.
“Great.” Roy said calmly, walking towards their car. “You coming or what?”
Ernie hurried forward so fast he almost tripped. Roy laughed.
They drew silently. Roy was chewing on his gum and watching the streets they were passing. Not looking at his partner, he started speaking.
“You’ve come real smart out of that Academy of yours, right?”
Not knowing what was the right thing to say, Ernie started carefully:
“I must serve and protect…”

Roy chortled and, for some reason, it made Ernie feel like the biggest idiot in the world.
“Yeah, you do that…”
The care drove on and Ernie felt suddenly very tired. This wasn’t how he’s imagined his first real patrol to be like at all. His partner turned the engine off and Ernie blinked hard a few times to bring himself back to present.
“Over there,” his partner’s voice sounded, “what do you see?”
Ernie looked in the direction the older police officer was pointing and saw that they were close to the entrance of the small park which mothers with children used to frequent during the day. Night was a different story altogether. Finally he noticed whom his partner meant. On one of the dirty benches sat a guy in modern clothes, which were too flashy for Ernie’s tastes.

“I see a young white male in his late twenties.” Ernie delivered promptly upon noticing his partner’s impatience. He looked hard but couldn’t see anything suspicious at all.
“Right.” Roy stated neutrally but Ernie didn’t miss the mocking undertone. “You, rookie, are gonna make your first arrest.”
Ernie’s heartbeat quickened.
“What are the charges?” He asked, eager and anxious alike.
Roy took his time to chew on his gum before spitting it right out of the window.
“He’s got narcotics.”
Without waiting for a reaction, Roy opened the door and Ernie could do nothing but follow. Ernie was fully prepared to do his duty but, for some reason, he felt like it was someone else walking a few steps behind office Jerkings; someone else watching a short dialog between the officer and the indignant young man on the bench; someone else running after said man who was trying to escape.
“Move! Bring him down!” He heard Roy’s growling voice behind himself.

Roy was, however, faster and Ernie was left to watch as his partner caught the dealer by the shoulder and pushed the protesting male down, putting his entire and not so small weight into it. The suspect cried out in pain and attempted to turn around and hit the officer. Ernie moved forward and pulled the man’s hand behind his back but was not fast enough to avoid the right hook that headed for his jaw. His partner immobilized the dealer’s other hand, punching him hard in the stomach twice while he was at it. Roy threw him the cuffs and Ernie used them, happy the Academy has thought them this much.
Together, they dragged the weakly protesting and swearing young man towards the car, searched him and pushed him onto the backseat.

“What’ve I heard, ‘dirty police pig’?” Asked Roy, leaning closer but not too close towards their suspect. “Assaulting an officer wasn’t enough, was it? You’re a lucky guy, Bob. Your old cell is still empty and eagerly awaiting.”
The dealer swore and Roy closed the car door abruptly, nodding with satisfaction at the pained sound that followed.
“Wasn’t that awful for your first time, rookie.” Commented the older officer as he moved towards the front door. Ernie felt a surge of pride hit him right before his partner added: “I thought you’d soil your pants, you looked like you were going to.”
Ernie flushed before asking:
“How did you know he’s got narcotics?”

His partner took his time, pulling a crumbled cigarette out of his breast pocket and lighting it up. Inhaling deeply, he puffed the smoke right into Ernie’s face. Ernie coughed. Roy laughed.
“There’s always a seventy percent chance Bob’s got narcotics.”
Ernie paused.
“And what if he didn’t, this time?”
“He’s still assaulted a police officer.” Roy shrugged, unbothered and puffed out another cloud of smoke which Ernie’s managed to dodge.
Ernie pondered that. This police job was certainly different than he’s imagined and certainly not like anything the Academy’s described. Perhaps following in his father’s footsteps and becoming a lawyer wasn’t such a bad idea, after all…
“Worry not, rookie.” Drawled Roy, meanwhile. “We’ll make a true cop out of you real soon.”
And that, that was exactly what Ernie was starting to fear…

Interesting story, and an unusual topic. I'm not sure if there is more to come, but if there is, I'll be happy to read more.

A couple of minor points meant as constructive criticism:

Be sure to proofread - "Roy threw him the cuffs and Ernie used them, happy the Academy has thought them this much." - I think you meant to say "...happy the Academy had taught him that much." There are a couple of other places in the story like this that need correcting.

Make sure the dialogue is realistic. You have done this for the most part, but there are a couple of places where Roy's diction just doesn't seem right - “Worry not, rookie” and "We’ve not all day."

But these are minor points, as I said. Overall, I enjoyed the story very much.
