The red badge of courage lacks the modern writing styles and techniques to appeal to an audience of our particular age group and despite a well thought out plot and detailed settings and characters I find it difficult to devote time to reading this book because of its dry writing and inability to relate to the readers, the red badge of courage is a book that should be found and enjoyed and not a book forced upon a student unwilling to take the time to study the writing styles of the author and the time period in witch this book takes place, to fully enjoy this book I feel it is imperative to gain as much outside knowledge concerning the content and literary technique. I feel without a sufficient and in depth understanding this book becomes both tedious and tiresome and would not recommend it to anyone uninterested in unique writing styles or historical fiction. I am not desputing Stephen Crane is a great author and the book is wonderful but it doesnt appeal to all age groups.
