You find yourself alone, walking life’s highway. The journey, until now has been uneventful. Chance meetings with fellow travelers have sometimes left you warm and fuzzy, and yet others, have resulted in feelings of cold emptiness. Thus far, it has been an arduous journey, leaving you a bit more frail than when you initially set out.
So now you have come upon the proverbial fork in the road. The sign on the left path denotes, to the land of milk and honey. On the face of it, there seems to be promise in this direction. That would be true, but for your lactose intolerance, and your allergies to everything bee related. Well, you think to yourself, there must be more than the sign’s metaphor. But what? Could I travel on from there? Would it be a better place, more fitting to my personal needs?
The fork to the right clearly states, to the land of despair. Immediately, you dismiss this choice. But, then you wonder, what could lie just beyond this land of despair? Might there be another place, perhaps the land of Good and Plenty? Now that would be a fun and tasty place. Yes, indeed.
But, there is a third choice. The straight path, the middle of the road. This sign simply states, objects in the rear view mirror are closer than they appear. What could that mean? Why would they post such an ambiguous sign? You ponder this sign for some time and can not come up with a meaningful explanation. Perhaps, it is written just to peak your curiosity. It certainly is a better sign than, dead end. Now that surely has a definite meaning.
You sit and begin to ponder your choices. As you are considering your options, three travelers trot by you. Without slowing, each one makes a choice and trots down a different path. You call out to them to stop. You wish to question them as to their respective choices. But, they are completely out of sight within seconds, and never heard your summons.
Day turns to night, light to dark, and still you are not able to decide which path to take. So you sleep, and dream. You dream of the land to the left and of the land to the right. But as to what the center path contains, your dreams and your mind can offer no clue.
As dawn creeps forward, and the sun begins to warm your soul, you make your choice. Stepping forward, you again read the signs. One more step, a step for you and a step for your future. You look towards the heavens and move forward. You check your rearview mirror, and see yourself when you were young. There is yet another sign, further on, and it does offer you the answer you expected, the one you had thought of.
