Hello,

I am meeting Cynthia Enloe this Tuesday during lecture to discuss her book "Bananas Beaches and Bases". However, I would like to get some help and ask you guys what would be good questions to ask her regarding her well written book? Please help. Thank you.

Best,

Fernando

I haven't read the book, but if you described it more, perhaps we could brainstorm some questions.

Here is a brief description: "This radical analysis of globalization reveals the crucial role of women in international politics today. Cynthia Enloe pulls back the curtain on the familiar scenes—governments promoting tourism, companies moving their factories overseas, soldiers serving on foreign soil—and shows that the real landscape is not exclusively male. She describes how many women's seemingly personal strategies—in their marriages, in their housework, in their coping with ideals of beauty—are, in reality, the stuff of global politics. In exposing policymakers' reliance on false notions of "femininity" and "masculinity," Enloe dismantles an apparently overwhelming world system, revealing it to be much more fragile and open to change than we think."

I thought this was a novel at first. Here are some questions:

1) Why "bananas"?
2) Why "beaches"?
3) Why "bases"?
4) What makes this "radical"?
5) Who does the author agree with?
6) Who does the author disagree with?
7) Some women work, but women are only discussed in therms of their marriages, housework and beauty. How to working women fit into this theory?
