A few months ago, my wife bought a kitchen helper called a mandolin. It is a slicer. A single blade, super sharp, set on a plastic ramp. You simply set your thickness setting with a dial and scale on the side of the device. Then take whatever you desire to slice, put it into the holder (NOW THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT) and slice away. Perfect slices, every time.

So, I'm making some sausage lasagna, and I need a diced onion. I prepare the onion by peeling it, cutting off the stem end. I then slice through it from the opposite end, in equal vertical slices from the center, all the way around. Normally, at this point, I would slice it across my cuts and end up with a perfectly diced onion. today, I got to the last step and decided to use the mandolin. BIG MISTAKE! On the third trip through, the holder slipped from the onion and now there is a 1/8" slice of my index (pointer) finger somewhere in the lasagna.

And, my finger is a bit shorter just now.

The lasagna tasted fine. It even had a special added flavor. :drool5:
