I wish to teach myself economics, politics, history, and philosophy. Yet in the future, when my time limited, I would prefer to dedicate my book reading to great literature and philosophy. But I would like to always learn the other subjects and to be well knowledgeable in them. Is there alternative ways to learn them besides reading books?

Most of the things I've learnt recently have come from someone posting something here that I respond to. The interaction does involve some outside reading on the internet or the library, but the motivation to find the information increases if you are talking to someone.

There are some pretty good podcasts around these days. Sometimes I listen to them at work. Now I actually look forward to being given a tedious job!

Keep in mind that many classics of literature contain quite abit of history, economics, politics, philosophy, and history. That's part of the awesomeness of western literature. It's a conversation that started 2500 years ago and has continued to the present day.
