Pushing too Hard

A mature woman I know just had a birthday. She's keenly aware that she's pushing 70. 'Pamela' wants no truck with 70.

"70, you see, is definitely old." she explained. "It's over the hill."

I give her a look and even with the Jimmy Choos on her face her mug is remarkably pretty.

"Listen, Babygirl," I tell her. " When I was reading Conrad one time, some of him rubbed off on me. I was on a bus talking to an older African American woman with corn rows in her gray hair, complaining about my approaching 66th birthday."

"What's wrong with you?" she said, and gave me the once over. I had more pepper than salt in my hair back then. I could Clooney it more often.

"You look O.K." she said so matter-of-factly I took it as true, and got up to get off at my stop.

"Just remember," she said. "Age ain't nothin' but a number anyway."

So don't let nobody tell you your life is over, Pirate Girl, not even yourself. Be every color that you are. We're into this rush together. Damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead.
