So I'm reading Carlyle's wonderful history of the French Revolution, but I'm getting frustrated at the number of archaic and/or foreign words that I'm having to Google -- often unsuccessfully.

Are there are any editions of his work that would give annotated explanations of all such terms (and even better, perhaps brief notes about every historical figure he throws in without introduction)?

And more broadly: is there a series that I can reliably turn to for annotations like these over a large selection of classic works?

Thanks!

Well perhaps you can just absorb his references and allusions without Googlisation. I remember reading my first Nabokov with Chambers dictionary by my side. Talk about turning pleasure to tedium. You could of course just make Carlyle a life's work.
