Dangers in Little Stag: Prologue

"How could you?" A voice screamed in the darkness.
"It was for your own good, Rosemary. Boys like him are only after one thing"
"Cameron, isn't like that, he is different he loves me we are going to be married!" pleaded Rosemary.
"That will never happen, you are a child. I forbid you to see him again do you understand!"
Rosemary started to pace the kitchen floor, physically shaking with hatred. Her father's angry words still spewing from his mouth. His anger and hatred filled the air. Rosemary could feel her self shaking, she couldn't believe what was happening. Only this morning, was she sharing such wonderful news with Cameron and they were planning their lives together. How they would buy a house together and how Cameron was earning more now he worked full time at the car garage. It would be ok, life would be ok. Rosemary sensed her father coming to the end of his rant.
"And anyway, I doubt even if you could , you wouldn't be able to see him again Rosemary, there was talk in the Dragon today, that Cameron has mysteriously disappeared. Rumour has it, he has done a bunk, run off followed some tart to Coventry." Rosemary's father laughed manically.
Rosemary collapsed to the floor, she knew exactly what her father was saying "mysterious" more like the boys had taken care of Cameron.
"You are a monster" she whispered through her grief stricken tears. Her father strode purposefully across kitchen and grabbed her by her shoulders and began shaking her.
"You are never going to see him again!" he shouted.
Rosemary's fist clenched in a fit of rage and she hit out at her father, she pushed with all her might to be released. Yet, despite her best effort he held her and kept shaking screaming his abuse at her, spiting all over her face.
"Let go... I am pregnant" she whimpered, and her father released his grip.
He stood over his dishevelled daughter, a look of pure disgust on his face.
"You're what! Pregnant you disgust me, my daughter the whore!"
"Cameron and I are happy, we are going to be married he cares for me, we love each other" she pleaded once more, but deep down she knew her father would never accept this child, would never accept that his daughter had fallen in love with the servants boy. She knew it was hopeless.
He stared at her, his mouth wide open and a wild look in his eyes, the disgrace, the dishonor brought on the family. He turned sharply and left the kitchen.
Rosemary clambered to her feet and steadied herself on the kitchen worktop, what was happening? She staggered towards the back door, to what should have been her safety. She could hear her father cursing, her mother pleading with him to see sense. Crash! Her mother screamed as she was flung aside. His boots stomped towards the kitchen, she had to make her escape quickly, bruised from the struggle she took one last step towards the backdoor, her hand grasping the handle...
"Oh no you don't!" snarled her father, he had reached her and grabbed her by her hair, she dropped to the floor in pain. With his shot gun over his arm, he dragged his daughter back into the main house.
BANG! BANG! Two shots echoed through the house.

Dangers in Little Stag: Chapter 1

James Devon walked into his office and closed the door. In his mind he relived the conversation he had this morning with his girlfriend, Susanna. How could she be so cold hearted? Her words echoed in his mind,
"I don't love you James, I never have and I never will"
How could he have been so stupid ? He seriously thought that this relationship was going to go the distance, that they were going to settle down and get married and have everything that you are supposed to have by the time your in your early thirties. He was so wrong. Here he was, approaching his 32nd birthday and his life had fallen apart. Everything he thought he knew for the last five years was a lie.
He had known something was wrong at Christmas, Susanna was being secretive and wasn't at work when she was supposed to. He had got off work early and went to surprise her but she wasn't there. She had later denied it, and an argument ensued as it always did. Was it that night, that she left and sought comfort in Adam's arms? Was it then that their affair started? Who knows, James always thought he would be able to pick up on these types of things, he was a police detective. Looking for clues and identifying liars was a thing that he did regularly. Was he a bad policeman? Was he any good as a detective? Thousands of thoughts flooded his mind all morning.

He was pouring over a police report when someone knocked on his door. Inspector Gideon marched in.
"James, I have heard the news" she said as she closed the door.
"Good news travels fast, Mam" James replied
"Indeed, well brush it off and you're better off without her. Anyways, I have an excellent opportunity for you, this morning I had a meeting with Superintendent Montgomery and he has decided to transfer you to Little Stag for six months to head up your own police force"she said enthusiastically.
"I'm hardly qualified Mam,"
"Nonsense, you are perfect for the job, see it as a opportunity to trial being an Inspector, you never know where these things lead. Do you know Little Stag?"
"No, Mam. " James replied.
"Well, its a jolly lovely place, just down the road from where you grew up I believe in Hampton. Look I will email over the particulars but this is an excellent transfer James." with that stood up and marched promptly out of his office.

Leaning back in his chair, James let out a breath. There had been rumors that a transfer was on the horizon. Talk in the team that someone would be shipped off. He hadn't heard anything about Little Stag, but knew it was close to where he grew up. A chance maybe to visit family. Only six months then a chance of permanent promotion to Inspector. Well that can't be a bad thing. James wondered what Susanna would say.
"James, you are not cut out for this, Daddy says you should join him in the family business" or "James, we never spend time together you are going to be away loads and what a bout family"
James had always known Susanna wasn't as keen on starting a family as he was, and he always hated it when she tried to get what she wanted by playing that hand.

James stood up and looked out of his office window, steel gray pavements and houses as far as he could see. Rain drizzling down the window. He could certainly do with a change of scenery. Maybe it was just the thing to prove to Susanna once and for all that all the work he did was for a reason.

.................................................. .......

Sun was streaming through the trees as a man stumbled through the undisturbed woods. He reached a clearly opposite The Manor House. A sight he knew only to well. It hadn't changed in the ten years he had been away. There was still an air of superiority about it. A desire to be the best. He closed his eyes and drifted into his memories. He heard her laughter and see her smile. What he would give to go back.
"Cam," a shudder rushed through
"Rosemary," he breathed tears stinging his eyes, "I've come home baby"
He strode purposefully across the perfectly manicured lawn towards the stately home. Familiar tread under his feet, he was home. He approached the back door and took a deep breath, clutching the door handle he focused himself.
He wasn't here to reconnect with his old life, Cameron's old life ended ten years ago. When he was carted off, by a group of men and beaten to an inch of his life. He had returned once before, not long after is beating but had heard such awful news. Rosemary had died. A tragic accident in the familiar home when a farm hand and misplaced the shotgun. At that moment, Cameron's life had ended, his one true love, his unborn baby taken from him. It had taken years for Cameron to be motivated to return and find out what exactly happened.
He knew that Rosemary's Dad, hadn't approved he knew that he had been behind the group of men that night. He had always wondered what would have happened if he had been there that night, would she still be alive? Would their baby be born happy and healthy? They haunted his dreams every night, and they deserved him finding out the truth.

Cameron walked into the Manor House, that same old smell hit him, and he remembered his mother cooking for the family and they would have left overs. He made his way carefully through the house, voices were heard in the drawing room. He looked through the door and saw the cause of the voices. A middle aged man sat by the fire, Charlie, Rosemary's father. Cameron stepped into the room and Charlie looked up.
"You!" Charlie spat, "I thought you would have come sooner than this"
Cameron approached and saw that this man in front of him was a shadow of his former self.
"What do you want, Cameron, Rosemary is long dead"
" That I know, Charlie, but I want to know what happened that night, I want to know why you did what you did? And, I want to know what happened to my beautiful Rosemary and our baby"
"Ha, there is nothing to tell, she died and that meant she was better off without you"
Cameron could feel the rage bubbling up inside, "What did you do to her?" he shouted.
"Nothing, she had an accident."
"I don't believe you, Charlie something happened and I know you had something to do with it. Did she tell you the news? Did she tell you everything?"
"She told me enough, it is in the pass now leave!"
Cameron knew he wasn't going to leave, he needed his answers. Rosemary needed answers. He sat down in the chair opposite Charlie.
"I am not going anywhere, Charlie." he said coldly. "You got rid of me once, but not again" He pulled from his pocket a revolver and slowly loaded it. Charlie's face grew gray.
"Now, let's start at the beginning shall we? What happened to Rosemary?" Cameron said calmly as he pointed the gun a Charlie.

.................................................. .......

The sun had begun to set when James Devon arrived in Little Stag. As he drove through the quaint English village he was able to get a sense of what he had let himself in for and what he had left behind. His conversation with Susanna had gone as he had expected, badly. She still didn't love him and didn't want him, and she could not care less if he was going to move out the flat for six months. James was sure he could hear Adam in the background.
He pulled up outside the local pub, which would be his home, for the foreseeable future. His car looked out of place next to the polished Bentley, and the Aston Martin. Whilst, this maybe close to his home town, it really was worlds apart from what he grew up with.
He approached the pub door and could hear the frivolities inside, people were singing and being generally merry. He pushed open the door and made his way towards the bar, occasionally, bumping into someone. A young barmaid walked down the bar towards him.
"What can I get you?" she asked. James peered up and was greeted by two large blue eyes staring kindly at him. She must have been in her mid twenties.
"Umm, I'm looking for the landlord, I rang earlier to arrange a room for the next week or two. My name is James..." he was interrupted by a clap on the shoulder.
"James Devon, I presume" the young girl smiled at James and disappeared along the bar to serve another customer. James couldn't help wishing that she had at least got him a drink first. James turned to greet the mysterious back slapper.
"Yes and you are" he started
"The names Alistair, Alistair Groombridge, I heard that we were going to be graced with your presence. A real life detective, well I never. Mind you not much happens here in Little Stag" the man rambled on.
"Forgive me but you have me at a disadvantage..." James began to say, but Alistair continued to ramble about idle gossip in the village. He stood there for ten minutes listening, when he glanced up and saw the young barmaid looking at him. James pleaded with his eyes "please rescue me," the girl smiled and walked away.
"Great," James thought as he stood there nodding in all the right places, when he felt a hand on his back.
"Excuse me gentlemen, but I need to show Mr Devon to his room." the young barmaid said.
Alistair stuttered and stared at the barmaid, "Of course, Grace tomorrow perhaps" he shook James' hand and staring at Grace's cleavage left.
Grace led James up a flight of stairs and towards the front of the pub.
"Thanks, for that I mean, I thought I would be there forever" James gushed as they walked into what would be his room.
"That is ok, Alistair is harmless but he does like to chat" she smiled warmly at him. " My father usually deals with this but he isn't here tonight, he has taken my mother out for the night. A rare treat. Here are you keys, we do serve breakfast that starts at 7 and ends at 10. The police station is the other side of the lake, a few minutes walk and there is the local shop next to the police station."
"OK, thank you I am sure I will need reminding but you have been very helpful"
Grace bid James goodnight and left his room. James stared around the room, it consisted of a large double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and a writing desk. There was an en suite bathroom and a large window overlooking the front of the pub. It would do for now. Music and voices from downstairs could still be heard, something which could become a nuisance.
It was only whilst he was alone did he remember the day he had had, arguments, Susanna and then work. Too restless to sleep, he ran himself a shower and tried to forget about the day for five minutes. Little did he know of the interruption he was about to receive.
