Mother's Day

It’s Harry Chapin’s song, but Harry never emphasized the darkness. Ugly Kid Joe's version does that, and reminds us that many parents are far from perfect. Parents are human and make mistakes. And though this song is about fathers, the same rules of nature apply to mothers. It’s a sad song that demonstrates an axiom we’d rather ignore, that our children follow our modeled behavior. So if we’re deficient, absent, or uncaring, it’s a struggle for them to become anything else.

There’s a flip side to that behavior, just as there are two sides to any coin. And instead of Dads, let’s talk about Moms. Most of us, especially when we are very young, spend more time with our mothers, and what they model becomes paramount in our development. I know a mother who has done her best, in loving and caring for her children. Her lines of communication are always free. Her heart is always open. Her spirit is resolute and her kindness unbounded.

It’s her day today, and time to blow the trumpet that signals recognition.

Both her girls are kind, hardworking, accomplished, and as of a week ago, both are mothers. She can look at them with pride, and as her supreme accomplishment.

Barb, you’ve done what you wanted, which is raised Nicole and Allison with as much love as your mother loved you. That’s the Mother’s Day present you gave your mother in heaven on this sunny May Sunday on earth. And these few words are what I give you, taking this opportunity to say, “Job well done.”

It’s a job that’s never finished. And don’t you, don't ALL you mothers, just love it?
