White lights. Overpowering my eyes like a tsunami. Was I still alive? Or maybe this was heaven.
I closed my eyes again. The light too overpowering to bare. My last memory: hazy. I heard footsteps in the distance; was this from man or beast? I lay listening to the footsteps for a few seconds. They became rhythmically in sync with each other like they were dancing to the beat of a song.
A few seconds later the light was no longer illuminated; darkness filled the room. I tried again to open my eyes. There were bars each side of me like a prison. I desperately attempted to ascend my body from the bed but the throbbing twinge in my neck tugged me back to the bed like the anchor of a ship.
Bang. The door slammed shut. A girl. I momentarily forgot the pain in my neck and turned to enquire about the rude entrance.
“May I help you?” I questioned precariously. Nothing.
“Yes, little girl. How may I help you?” I queried with increasing intensity.
Still nothing. She merely stared through me like my existence was mute. The girl was no older than maybe seven years old. She knelt in the corner embracing herself like a mother would her infant.
