Riddle Me This!

Okay, so here is a riddle. I heard it on public radio so I take no credit for it. Let's see if you can figure it out.

You have two prescription medicines, histoxylocaine and novomine. You have to take one pill of each per day.
You have to be careful though because the pills of both medications look and taste exactly the same.
So you tap the little bottle of histoxylocaine and one of the pills rolls into your hand. Then you tap the little bottle of novomine, but by accident two pills roll into your hand, and you weren't paying attention and now you don't know which is which.
So you have three pills in your hand that look and taste exactly alike. You know that one of the pills is histoxylocaine and two of them are novomine.

So the question is: How can you be sure you get your daily dose of exactly one pill of histoxylocaine and one pill of novomine?

Here is what I would do. Leave those pills alone. Never use them. Start over from the supply in the bottles. Use them up until there is zero left in one bottle and one left in the other bottle. You still don't know about the original three. Doesn't matter. At this point you will have renewed the prescription--before your supply has run out. Simply throw away the original three and the one remaining in the bottle.

Take another histxylocaine out of the bottle. Grind all four pills into a powder an mix thoroughly. Divide the mixture in half. Take half one day and the other half the next day.
