Hi all, new to the forums. I feel creative writing is a great way to explore my imagination and dream so I am glad I found this site and I hope to become involved in it moving forward!

Here is my short story:

As his eyes met hers, a sudden wave of emotion overcame him. They stared at each other, locked in an eternal gaze of moon and sun; revolving around each other for what seemed to be an eternity. He walked over to her keeping his chest high and breath held in. His heartbeat synchronized with his steps: “pit-beat, pat-beat.” Her eyes fluttered down, a wave of red overcame her face. No words were said, none were needed. The man, a fair man of good heart and pure intent, held out his hand in a gesture of reconciliation. She embraced his hand with hers.

This man had spent many long nights anticipating this moment. His heart had faded, but even the darkest nights could not put out the flame of hope that burned inside. As he held her hand, his mind wandered. They walked to a meadow, the girl sat down and so did he. She looked at him, and he back. How many hours had this man been waiting for this moment, how many days had this lonely man walked along this same meadow. He went to speak, to say three words whose power has killed more men and torn more kingdoms than any other. Three words whose meaning had brought enduring souls together and given meaning to an unforgiving world. Before the words left his lips, she intervened. His heart beat faster, his vision blurred and his hearing failed him. She was saying words but he could not understand. He went to hold her hand, but he could not find it. He looked up at her face, but she was no longer there. Panic overcame the man as a black smoke consumed him and he was pulled from his dream.

The man awoke to the world. Where was this girl, this girl who had moved mountains and forever changed his life. She was nowhere to be found; it was just a dream.

The tension in this piece is nearly palpable. It's well-written and captivating, though if you've read to the end it's also sad. Ah, but sometimes the best stories are the sad ones.
