I should have known better
than to fall in love
with the image you had of me:
that of the tall, lean guy
in the smart suit
amused smile on his lips,
right eyebrow raised,
the guy who’s standing at the piano
where someone’s playing
the Rachmaninov-Prelude No. 4 in D major,
the guy moving his foot up and down
in time to the music.
That guy existed
maybe.
But fifteen failed relationships ago.
