The best way to play Sir Toby on stage is to get intoxicated beforehand. Drink what it is that Toby drinks--or as close to it as possible. This will allow you to become more believable to the audience, as well as helping you "get into character".

Hope this helps (in the event any of you are assigned this role.)

When we performed Twelfth Night recently, i was to play Sir Toby, and as a result, had to research his drunken ramblings. Pickleherring referes to Pickled fish (herring) which was considered a delecasy in the time, but caused hideous breath, and frequent burps and hickups.

The problem with getting intoxicated before going on stage, is that alcohol affects your memory and addles your thinking... therefore you might not be able to preform properly. You could forget your lines, or forget where you are altogether (admittably, though, this would take a lot of... er... "Getting into Character") Anyway, I find it inadvisable...

Sorry, but I think that that is a really bad idea. Especially not if your Sir Toby is involved in any combat.
