Tolkien's works were impacted by several things in his life. Writing stories helped him deal with the emotional trauma in his lifetime, as he had lost his mother at age 12 as well as experienced the hardships of World War One. For example, Mordor has been compared to battlefields of war. To evade and conquer dark lords who wanted to control everything they could became a common theme in his Lord of the Rings works, which also has echoes of his experiences in the war. Beowulf was a strong influence on his writing, and one of the parts he found most inspiring about it was the part that highlighted the importance of monsters in literature, especially dragons. His love with his wife, Edith Bratt, impacted how he portrayed lovers in his books. They were usually separated by long distance, or obstacles put in their path by people who did not want their love to happen, much like his own problems in love. If there are any other influences you might want to add, please put them in the comments. Thanks! ^_^

I would say that Tolkien was especially fond of trees. It showed in many ways, like the Ents, and the elves.
