The Lord of the Rings is considered by many the basis of modern fantasy today. These works have given the basis of high fantasy for novels today, such as Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle, which has so many similarities to the trilogy that some accused the author of plagiarism. The Lord of the Rings provided the general quest to overtake a dark lord threatening a fantasy land, with the protagonists holding very little chance of survival. The protagonist usually has the task of defeating the antagonist thrust upon them, and all seems to be lost at times. There are also many other races populating the land besides the protagonist's own. Included in these are elves and dwarfs like the ones found in the Lord of the Rings. Many, if not all of these characteristics may be displayed in a Tolkien-inspired book.

Sorry for posting so much Tolkien related stuff, it's for a school project. I just need to make a few more posts, that's all.

No doubt it influenced many who read it but Tolkein was basing the whole idea on many very old quest stories and stories involving talismanic objects. He was actually part of a long ( even ancient) tradition. No doubt too it's popularity has encouraged plagiarising of his brand by writers who have imagination but not quite enough to present realistic characters in realistic settings faced by realistic challenges

The activity in The Lord of the Rings is situated in what the creator imagined to be the grounds of the genuine Earth, occupied by humankind however put in an anecdotal past, before our history yet after the fall of his variant of Atlantis, which he calls Númenor
