The Lord of the Rings action

How do you think J. R. R. Tolkien handled the action in his Lord of the Rings trilogy? I that he could've added more of it and perhaps less description in his writing, because while reading his books I feel like there isn't a lot of action, but maybe that's just how he's worded his writing. Though I must add that in some points in the series the pace did pick up and hold my attention. :)
