If there is another thread, I have not seen it. That is, one on literature of the Pacific Islands. I would like to group Filipino and Papua New Guinean literature here as well since the literature of these island groups is seldom discussed (this even though The Philippines, especially, is not counted, traditionally, among the Pacific Islands; that is, those that comprise Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia).
I quite like Melville (Typee, Omoo, Mardi), Henry Dana Jr., Robert Louis Stevenson (short stories), and others. But I am even more interested in books by native authors. I quite liked The Wind Gourd of Laamaumau (Moses Kuaea), Whale Rider (Witi Ihimaera), and Maiba (Russell Soaba), but disliked Where We Once Belonged (Sia Figiel), and Once Were Warriors (Alan Duff). In order, these books are from Hawaii, New Zealand (Aotearoa), Papua New Guinea, Samoa, New Zealand.
There are others I have read too, but I can't think of them now. Have y'all read any of these, or any other books by authors of the Pacific?
