The Elizabethans believed in the wheel of fortune and its ability to control human lives’. The goddess Fortuna spins the wheel randomly. Some lose and suffer while others win. Romeo and Juliet are star-crossed lovers who are destined to face a terrible death. Throughout the play the two lovers predicted their own fate in certain incidents.
Romeo was fated to meet Juliet and love her from the first sight. It is chance that put Romeo in Clown’s way. Clown couldn’t read the guests list, so Romeo read for him and decided to go to the feast. Romeo predicted that this feast is the beginning of something bad that will lead to his death. He said,” I fear too early for my mind misgives some consequences yet hanging in the stars”.
Fate was never on the side of the two lovers throughout the play. After Romeo killed Tybalt, the Prince of Verona banished Romeo to Mantua. In the parting scene, Juliet told Romeo that she fears they will never meet again. Romeo tried to calm her down by telling her that they will meet again. At this moment, Juliet predicted that she is looking at Romeo as if he were lying dead in his tomb. She said,” Methinks I see thee, now thou art so low, as one dead in the bottom of a tomb”.
Again the wheel of fortune spins to be against the two lovers. Romeo dreamt that his lady came and found him dead. After this premonition, Romeo got the false news of Juliet’s death. With this news Romeo bought poison and committed suicide. When Juliet woke up she found exactly what she early predicted. Romeo was lying dead in front of her, so she killed herself.
Fate and chance played a vital role in moving the events of the play. It is fate that hindered Friar John from delivering Friar Lawrence’s letter to Romeo. Fate gave Romeo the false news of Juliet’s death. Fate made Romeo kill himself a few minutes before Juliet woke up. The two lovers are victims of fate and chance.
From a general perspective fate wasn’t on the side of the two lovers. However, this bad luck did good things as well. The long lasting feud between the Capulets and the Montagues finally ended with the death of the two lovers. The two families decided to build two statues for their children and put them next to each other in Verona. Eventually, Capulet shakes hands with Montague and gives him his daughter’s wedding gift. The Prince of Verona said,” For never was a story of more woe than that of Juliet and her Romeo”. Romeo and Juliet were fated to love and die for the good of Verona.
