Has anybody read Martin Fierro?

Borges was obsessed with this poem. It turns up in Gravity's Rainbow too. But I've rarely heard it discussed, never see it on any lists, and the editions I see on Amazon look dubious. Is Martin Fierro a great unknown epic waiting for a decent translation, or is it actually just not very good?

Also, are there any other good examples of gaucho literature? Borges's stories caught my imagination, but I've not heard of any other books about this culture.
