Hi Cacian, let me answer some of your questions:
1- For me it is better to write ten poems not to translate one.
2- Many specialists would say poetry is untranslatable work because of rhyme and rhythm and on translating process; some of these properties were going to be lost.
It is better for you to keep on meanings and neglecting other features because without meaningful lines your job likely should be awkward and going on defects.
3- The rhymed poem can be translated for free verses, moreover, if you are more experienced and familiar with literary translation you can make here or there some shifts, for example, you can omit the unnecessary expressions and change them to be acceptable to the target language or to precede something and postpone the other.
Thus, translation is a skilful craft, since many graduates can't translate on literature, but they can for example translate on the journal translation or on TV.
4- For another question you asked about; the pros and cons, or on another word; the argument against, yes, I myself keep on this to be one of my favorite significances.

PROS:

1. It's entertaining.
2. It's good for your brain. It can actually make you smarter if you read books that challenge your thinking and whose meaning you attempt to gain an understanding of.
3. It can teach you things and help you acquire new facts. This is different and imo less important than #2, but its still a benefit.
4. It can introduce you to different cultures and thought processes from around the world, which can broaden you viewpoint.
5. It can help you develop a taste for good writing and plot. It can enrich your understanding of a given language and how it can be most luxuriously applied.

CONS:

1. The only two things that really come to mind are that it can be a method of propaganda and pushing negative viewpoints.
2. It can turn you into a book snob, and not in a good way, unless you rein yourself in abit.
