"Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious." ~ George Orwell
This quote expresses how the proles are ignorant to what's going on in their surroundings due to the distractions put in place by Big Brother.
Multiple distractions used in Oceania are also used in our world such as the lottery, alcohol and nicotine or other drug products. We may not realize it, but the government is constantly distracting us with our jobs and debt. We are constantly working for their benefit, but are always indebted to them. Maybe we're already beginning the transition into the world of 1984. Maybe it's time for us to stop looking at forecasts in literature, but our own government and their lack of transparency?

I agree completely. Orwell is trying to make the need for the general public to open their eyes and stop allowing themselves to be taken advantage of clear. In the case of 1984, this quote applies to the proles' blinding ignorance, however, it is still relevant in today's culture as well. Even today, the government uses things such as sports, gambling, celebrity gossip, and so much more to distract citizens from what is really going on in government. All of these things take people's eyes off what really matters, such as unemployment rates, terrorism, illiteracy, and so many others. I believe that more people need to take this novel's accuracy into account, despite the fact that it was written many years ago.
