This simple mathematical sentence 2 + 2 = 5 becomes a motif linked to the theme of psychological independence. Early on in the novel Winston writes, “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two makes four.” Thus meaning that one has the power, and independence to speak the absolute, logical truth. This shows that the party has so much control and power that they are able to manipulate and brainwash anybody they wish into believing anything that is relevant to them. Using a common math problem, Orwell proves that anything, no matter how simple, can be changed from right under your nose.

Is there anything like this in our lives today? Do we believe in anything that is absurd to believe in if we only gave it some thought?

Identifying these is when 2 + 2 = 5 becomes interesting.

i don't agree.
this formula could not express freedom because
2+2= 5
and
5= 2+2+1
the formula (2+2) is repeated twice
plus
two is repeated twice
and then
the number two/2 is
itself a repeated number twice
there is a lot of repeat and not enough individuality
which reminds me of communism
individuality IS freedom.

You're right. 2+2 does not equal 5, because 5 also equals 2+2+1 and that would mean 1 would equal 0. Which it doesn't.

But we all know that about the number 5. What are the things that we believe in that are false that we don't know at the moment are false? What are the things that once we become mindful of them, they will look as ridiculous as 2 + 2 = 5?

I suspect each of us has a dozen of these. I know over the years I have had way more than a dozen and probably have many more that I haven't yet discovered.
