On page 27 through 28, Winston is describing a dream he had. He shares what he remembers of his mother, father, and little sister. Deeper within the dream, his mother and sister are down in a well, or in some place underground. He begins to lose sight of his family and eventually comes to conclude that they sacrificed their life for him. Does this dream resemble how his mother and sister were somehow caught by the Thought Police and saved Winston from being killed? .. or am I just thinking too far outside of the box? .. or making something insignificant, significant?

While I haven't read that book in quite a while, I remember that part. That's what I got out of it.

I believe that this dream is significant. Why else would Orwell include this? As my english teacher likes to put it, he's ringing the bell. He's putting this in here to signify something, to lead to something bigger. I believe that this dream will lead to something larger later on in the book. It's just a matter of reading to find out

I agree with Basketball4ever Orwell wouldn't include this in the book if it wasn't significant. Also I believe in a way it does resemble how his mother and sister were caught, but I don't think they saved Winston from being killed. Because later on in the book it tells you that at that time Winston had run away from home, so even if Winston's mom had told the thought police about him which I highly doubt she did they wouldn't know where he went or if he would even come back home.
