If you would have read the book properly, and the stage directions, you would have noticed that it said, Enter Leonato, Governor of Messina, Hero his daughter, BEATRICE HIS NIECE, with a messenger'. My suggestion is you learn how to read before making any further suggestions.

yes, beatrice is leonato's niece, they said that. the disagreement was whether beatrice was antonio's daughter. i agree, she is probably not antonio's daughter, because why did benedick ask leonato if he could marry her? my guess is her father is a third brother, who is dead. if she were antonio's daughter benedick would have asked him for his daughter's hand in marriage.

it doesn't matter if it says that! it still doesnt mean shes antonios daughter it just means she's leonatos niece, he could have other brothers and sisters

Actually, you're all wrong. Antonio couldnt possibly be Beatrice's father because, if you had read properly the play, it says quite clearly that Beatrice is an orphan! DUH!

the point is that everybody knows that Beatrice is Leonarto's niece but there is no proof that she is Antonio's daughter, especially as it says that she is an orphan.

There you go Anonymous, uh, #1. "If you would have read the book properly..." Some people...That had to have been a female trying to berate you; I could just sense it...(Ladies, please don't take offense). She clearly missed the point...People need to be a little more kind in this world...

Much poise my friend. Many would have fallen victim to her fallacy.
To the original response: You are right. It doesn't say that Beatrice is Antonio's daughter and everyone does assume that because of her connection with Leonato.
To the first response: I think YOU should read more carefully. If you notice, there is a period after the word THAT. It can be misread, and that is what you did, so pay attention to little details.
Second response: makes sense. Good theory. It seems like Beatrice has had no father figure throughout her entire life, seeing how she is such a free spirited woman, not to be told off by any man. If there had been a father figure, he most likely would have made her behave like a proper child like Hero, as does Leonato.

This doesn't really make any ado to the story. Whether or not she is the daughter of Antonio, it doesn't give or take away from the story. Whoever started this discussion has too many hours on hand to criticize wonderful pieces of art.

i totally agree with you on that one!!peolpe just think that because Antonio is Leonatos brother that he is Beatrices' father but he isn't!!
if you look at the list of chareters at the front of the play it clearly states that Beatrice is an orphan therefore NOT Antonios daughter!

Antonio is not Beatrice's father, it never said that. Beatrice is Leonato's niece and Antonio's his brother, so every one just assumes it.
