The monsters came
The monsters went
The monsters shopped
The monsters spent

They bought up big
They bought up wide
I say those monsters
They had some hide

The Brooklyn Bridge
The Empire State
He saw them coming
They took the bait

The Guggenheim
The Museum too
And everything
On Park Avenue

Such silly monsters
But with wallets fat
Now deflated
By a man in a hat

The Ghost Train

The Ghost Train arrives at six o'clock
Twice a day, around the block
No ticket needed: it's the end of the line
If you've done nothing wrong
You're sure to be fine

The Ghost Train hoots it's steamy bell
On a journey to the gates of Hell
All aboard! Join in its one way voyage
If you've done something right
Get in the last carriage

A glimpse of the fires, the scream siren
Will strike you like bad Lord Byron
Yea, a clarion call to keep in the light
And not stray into darkness
Lest you die of fright

The Fiends

The fiends they came from everywhere
From the gutters and from storm drains
They seemed to appear from thin air
What they were were royal pains

They ravaged the Municipal Library
And also the one in Princeton too
Both met their ends blazing and firey
Then they went to work on Brooklyn Zoo

They ate the peanuts, they drank the coke
Before they let all of the animals out
Passersby they kicked and choked
Walked away with a laugh and a shout

As quick as they arrived they disappeared
The mayor urged the citizens to keep cool
And though this allayed everyone's fears
At lunch shouldn't they be kept in school?

The Alien From Out Of Space

I wakes up
And notices strange lights
Flickerin round the room
Different colours
Emanatin from the open window
Which I was sure I shut

The curtains is blowing in and out
Breathily
In the breeze

I goes to the source
To close it
But also to see
What's occurrin out there

There's the moon
Glowin through oak branches

But that's not it

Moonlit midnight clouds
Scattered abstractions
Of their daytime cousins

Not them

There's the streetlights
Cloaked in swirlin Autumn mist

But they're not the culprits

Then I sees it!

Hidin behind a water tower
I's been meanin to investigate
There's this big
Some'd say enormous
Monstrosity
Of a sort of a flyin saucer

That is it looks like a saucer
The way a fryin pan
Looks like a saucer

If you squints hard enough

Mainly it is burstin
With searchlights
So I can't say
I has a good look at it

Just a look
And a vague idea
Because I am blinded

But regardless
As I was intendin
To visit the watertower
Anyway
I puts on me boots
Grabs me coat

And walks out the front door

Toward the lights

About a mile away

I's hardly made it to the end of the block
When suddenly
There's this huge squawky noise

Earsplittin

Headplittin also

And then it stops

At first I thinks
I hope it didn't wake anybody up
But then I checks meself

Why did I have that thought?

Probably because
Boots and pyjamas
Isn't a good look

I sees a few windows light up
But nobody comes out
So that's somethin

So sooner
Than I thought it'd take
I was standin right under it
Underneath the contraption
With its lights and gurglin noises

What's it up to?
I wonder aloud

And then I realise
It's thievin!

It's nickin all the water!
Straight out of the tank!

Outrageous!

So now I gots me
A new dilemma
Does I interfere
Or put it down to experience?

Bugger that

I wants a shower
And if they pilfers all the juice
No shower for me

So I starts to climb up
Slowly
Because the ladder's
Quite rickety
And rusty
But eventually
I makes it to the top

There's a thick hose
Hangin out of the tank
Goin into a hatch
In the spaceship

And I thinks maybe
I should cut it

But no tools

And then I thinks
If I climbs across
I can maybe
Reverse the pump
And refill what they's took

So I does

It's a pretty large hole
And I fits though easy
But the pumps
Controls
Signs everywhere
All written
In Alien lingo

Don't know what I's doin really
But I must've stumbled
On the right combination
As the next second
A great
Ice Monster Alien
Comes in
And gibbers somethin awful

At first I felt a bit guilty
But then nah
It's my water
For my shower

The Alien starts waving somethin

It could be weapon
So I knocks it out of its claw
And picks it up

Icy reels back
Sort of cowerin
But doesn't know
That I doesn't know
How to use it

So I just waves it back at him
If from a sensibler distance

Then when I remembers
What ice is made of
I starts tryin to
Make a connection

A mental connection
I means
Because there's
No chance of
Communicatin

So yeah
Maybe I should
Leave him some water
Just in case he needs it
More than me

I turns the pumps off

And starts to climb out
Backwards
With the weapon
Aimed at him
In case he tries somethin

And as a memento

I watches it fly off
Toward the lake

And heads home
To take me shower
