What author proposed to the same woman 3 times over the course of 8 years?

I remember reading a wikipedia article some years ago about a well-regarded/popular author whom I believe was English, and the fact that he proposed to the same woman I believe at least three separate times over the course of 8 or more years. Anyone know?

I can't remember his name or his works; I just keep thinking of Byron, which is wrong.
