confusing categorizations

I attended a lecture a month ago about ethnic literature, where the speaker made the following categories even more confusing. I was wondering if some of you can help me with this.

What are the differences between African American literature, Afro-American literature, and black literature? She even mentioned Negro literature.
Please let me know what you think. Thanks a lot.

Lets call a spade a spade. There is so much political correctness in the coinage of words these days, that it results in a dumbing down of the English language.

The only distinction in the question you raise, is whether the written piece in question is written by a black American ( e.g. James Baldwin ) or a black person ( e.g. As in Cry The Beloved Country)
