rules on writing sometimes cause confusion and what i have discovered thus far is that those who laid down the rules do not usually abide by them nor follow it to the letter.

Did you read the "rules" on writing that Edgar Allan Poe wrote? He was one of the first on doing so, therefore his work is great, but there are some criticism we can make to some of the things that he said...
For example, he says that a short story is anything that you can read in one sitting, and there are some short stories, I can guarantee, that took me longer than one sitting, and novels that took me sth close to one sitting :P
