Hi!

New forum user here - my name is George, and I am an independent filmmaker. Very happy to join everyone else here!

I realize this might be the unusual post, at least a little bit. To make it short:

I am looking for a short story or a short novel to adapt into a low budget film (it would be my first feature film - I have done only shorts films so far). I have no restrictions at all as far as the genre is concerned, as long as the story is good! I realize this might sound too general, but the naked truth is that you never know a story is good until you read it, no matter the type or the genre. So, in my experience, it is useless to have a preconceived idea or to structure your readings in any way when you plan to adapt something - you have to rely on the randomness of the process. You never know where or how you will find the little gem that sets off a spark in you that makes you want to adapt that story into a film. I hope I don't sound presumptuous, it's not my intention at all. On the contrary, I am humbly asking for advice or pointers from people who I know have read much, much more than me, and can perhaps lend me a helping hand.

The only limit would be the budget. Obviously, I can't go overboard - any project I make would be an independent project made with a small budget. For this reason, stories which are limited in scope, settings, characters would be ideal. That's pretty much the only soft limit I am putting forth (and I completely realize this is a very relative requirement!)

Do you know of any little story which you thought would make a great film? Perhaps a story that happens over the span of 24h, or only a single night, or over a few days? Something that is great but not epic in scope? Perhaps adhering to the Greek unity of space/time/action? (but not necessarily)

I would really, really appreciate any advice.

I realize my post can be easily shot down with contemptuous remarks. But, I have to say, reading over numerous threads and posts in this forum, I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of people here - intelligent, well-read and, it seems to me, ready to help! If you can go past my rather vague request and limits I put forth (which I fully assume, by the way - but I see no other way around it), it would be amazing if we could get a discussion going. I promise to read most of the recommended material and keep everyone posted about my progress.

I am sure there are some stories out there which would make great little films. If you can help me out to find one, I would be really grateful!

Thanks! Looking forward to your replies.
George

Ecellent idea, George, to ask us on this forum about it! What do you think about my story for this purpose of yours?

Whatever you decide, I wish you all the best in your work.

Good story. But I think that you are an aspiring writer, I'm sure that in the future date you can the largest on. Good luck to you

Gabriel Garcia Marquez - Chronicle of a Death Foretold.

A brilliant novella which in film will pique the interest of viewers, methinks. You don't have to re-enact the Colombian town scene for the movie. You can take from the novella and make a film in a modern setting, perhaps.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I'll read it.

However, going by the Wiki page on this novel, it has already been adapted a couple of times:

---------------------
Adaptations[edit]
It was translated into English by Gregory Rabassa and by Edith Grossman. The book was adapted for the big screen in the Spanish language film: Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1987), an Italian-French-Colombian co-production, directed by Francesco Rosi, starring Ornella Muti, Rupert Everett and Anthony Delon. In 1995, Graciela Daniele adapted it into the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical of the same name, which she also directed and choreographed.

A Romanian short-film was made in 2007.

Mystery and suspense are good genres for low-budget films. I'd recommend going back to the days of the magazines, where simple, streamlined, no-fat storytelling was the order of the day. Lots of good stuff there, and story collections are easy to find cheap in used bookstores (or free in libraries).

Yes, but if you actually go ahead and make a film for any kind of public viewing, here's a caveat: make sure you have secured the rights to use the work -- in writing.
