Hello everyone,

I recently read Dickens ATOTC, and a question still bugs me:

Can anyone tell me what Sidney Carton buys at the apothecary in Paris, near the end of A Tale of Two Cities? At first I thought it was some sort of explosives to get Darnay out of prison if all else fails… then I thought maybe a poison to kill himself should he have to switch places with him. In the end, whatever it was never got used (or I didn’t understand it) and I’m still curious :-)

Maybe I missed something obvious because English is not my first language... any hints appreciated.

*Hand up* me, me, me. I know.

It was chloroform. He needs to knock out Charles Darnay so he can swap places with him. Darney would certainly would certainly have refused otherwise.

Ahhhh! Thanks a lot!
Yes I remember when Charles says "What's that smell?" and suddenly collapses and I was wondering "Wtf? What was that?". Yeah makes total sense now :-)
