First thing first, I'm not quite familiar with writing a short story as I'm a screenwriter. Therefore, I call this a playground of ideas.
CIRCLE
An usual day at emergency department.
An ambulance urges to stop. Back-door burts open. Two nurses hop out. A man gets out of the front seat who appears to be a cop.
Joanna rushes through the door to receive a new patient. A female who's got a severe burn, so severe that her face is impossible to be recognized.
They waste no time to roll the patient into a surgery room, but it's still too late. With that kind of injury, only the death itself can help.
Joanna worries about the presence of the cop, which means something bad has happened or will happen. She knows there's nothing to do with her, but she still gets scared for no reason. She wants to tell the cop what she feels, but something inside keeps holding her back. The feeling of knowing the victim.
******************************
Detective Kane comes to a morgue for autopsy reports. The coroner found gasoline in her lung and stomach. Doen't look like an accident very much. Also, her back is not destroyed so they can see a long old scar probably left by a surgery. And Kane finds it disturbing when he holds her identity files in his hands. Her pictures, he recognizes that face. He met her before, not so long ago.
******************************
Joanna closes the front door and feels so relieved to be home, even though she lives here alone. She takes a look around, secures every windows before going to bath room.
"Over The Hills And Far Way", her favorite song fills up the air from her phone as she enjoys a tub of hot water. She even hums along. The worries almost fades away. Almost...
The message ringtone nearly freezes every single molecule in the room. Why today? If it was the other days, it would be no problem. But why today? Joanna stares at the phone like it's going explode in a second.
"It's only a message" Thought Joanna.
She slowly stands up, revealing a long old scar probably left by some sort of surgery.
She approaches the phone carefully and grabs it. Strange number, not. Comparing with her own one, this is only different from the last number. 3 and 4 to be exact. She opens the message, nervous as hell.
"He was standing behind me" said the message.
Her heart slows down. She holds her breath and slowly turns around...
******************************
Kane drives his car as fast as possible. The night street is cold and empty, especially on a hill. From here he can see the fire behind the trees.
"Goddammit!"
He arrives when the fire has already gone mad. He calls for help while ducking under "no trespassing" tapes set up this morning...
