Yes, guy grooming is for women.

Males afflicted with that disease probably should try psychotherapy first. If that doesn't work, then a frontal lobotomy may work.

I'm pretty much a get-out-of-bed-and-go kind of guy... a shower, grab whatever clothes are on the floor, and I'm ready for the new day. I do however shave... you know, down there. But I don't think that's all that weird, lots of guys do it. Here's me in my pajamas.;)

It's all about the money. The producers of male makeup see a potentially huge market there equivalent to the female one. I don't think it's a question of whether male grooming should be adopted but when. Advertisers are cunning and play the long long game.

The above one with Hugh Laurie uses humour and that one stop simple solution message. The messages are subtle and over time it will become the norm.
My wife has already suggested to me that I should use some kind of moisturiser, but I'm afraid that beyond sunblock, I have no interest or desire. I'm not the target audience though but you can bet that there will be messages like "tough guys take care of their skin" and all the supposed attractiveness that comes with a "facial routine". ( I don't know where I heard that phrase and it is a testimony to the subtle success of the male make up message that I do know it). I'm not buying it though.

I'm seeing two types of ad campaigns... one meant for the 30 and under guys (very hip and very stupid, use our products and get hot chicks), the other for older guys like the commercials Dove has going right now. Just sort of making like it's no big deal "Dove Men Care", it's just soap with moisturizers and you can still be manly!:)

They're hilarious aren't they - but only slightly more hilarious than the women's versions - probably due to their newness/relative novelty.
Yet they will win with massive profits over time. I remember first encountering oven chips and thinking - these are horrible, they'll never catch on. They're still mostly horrible but have caught on in a big way. It does make you wonder what a population could be sold.

Yeah, if it actually stops skin cancer, then I'll use it. But all the marketing is really awful. Imagine if the same money was spent on proper research and putting essential facts across. For instance, I'm wondering if I need sunblock given that I'm in the UK and, at most, spend an hour in the sun. Also, I'm totally perplexed by which toothpaste to buy. Is Sainsbury's Basics (with just the fluoride) enough or do I need Colgate Total with the weird polymer that coats the teeth and *maybe* protects them, but costs ten times as much... or something else...

I agree. I think the biggest mistake is to think that advertising doesn't work. So much is invested because it does. I find adverts boring, grotesque and funny. Did you see the National Bus advert with David Soul singing Silver Lady whilst driving a bus? Hilarious. I though the Clas Ohlson ad was really funny too.

On the toothpaste - the chief medical officer for dentistry was on the BBC a couple of years ago. He said modern toothpastes build up the teeth again and so don't spit and rinse - keep it in there as it helps to build up a barrier. I'd never heard of this, and, him being the chief medical officer, I thought he had more credibility. I have bad teeth, but I haven't had any problems since i decided to follow his advice.(I haven't been to the dentist since 2008). I don't buy the very dear stuff, but get the best brand available from one of our local poundshops.
Who knows though...

It's questionable whether tanning and wearing make-up can be termed 'looking after yourself'. They strike me as just bad habits picked up as a consequence of consumer obsessed culture. I'm not particularly attracted to girls who wear so much fake rubbish that they look like drag acts, but then I don't find females remotely attractive anyway. Make-up worn daily in fact makes your skin dull and grey, which makes girls more and more dependent on wearing it.
You look after your health and your appearance by eating well and exercising. Don't let any businessman tell you any different.

Yep, advertising is just total brainwashing. I have always said it is evil. For example how can Carling, the most undrinkable drink, be the most popular lager in the UK?! Totally unbelievable! Well they have got lots of adverts so of course people will drink the foul stuff, I would rather drink drain clearner but it is on the TV so the sheep drink it. Disgusting.
I like the National Express advert, very funny, thanks. Of course, they don't advertise that the same 1 hour 15 min journey on the train takes 8 1/2 hours on the NE for example (if you don't believe me try looking for Sheffield to Lincoln), no wonder that kid is so glad to see his mother he thought he might die of starvation!

Not owning a TV, I was unaware that Carling was now being heralded as the UK's most popular lager. This isn't surprising since advertisers will say almost anything, but from my observations I would say that Fosters might be the one that is drunk most often, although I have to agree that they are both pretty foul.
As for 'male cosmetics' I can only repeat Rex Harrison's crie de coeur in the film 'Staircase': "There's nothing poofy about me!"
I wonder, does male grooming apply to the increasing number of neanderthals wandering about with tattoos and what's sometimes referred to as 'body piercing ?
It's true that many adverts are dull to the point of stupefaction but the amusing ones do go some way to redeeming the profession.

I think Neely was referring to beer from the pump in public houses but it makes little difference to either Carling or Fosters which remain watery rubbish at best. A decent English beer has to be an English ale poured from the pump and the best of these is Fullers ESB, brewed in London and very smooth, strong and expensive.
As for muscle men, there is, perhaps erroneously, an idea that the bigger the muscles the smaller the brain.
I threw away my TV about three or four years ago. I never did think much of the medium but with the advent of Youtube it became pretty much redundant for my purposes. I think it's primarily for sport, unless soap operas, pop music and quiz shows are considered entertainment. The great thing about Youtube is that it's possible to watch any TV items that might be entertaining, such as the occasional Have I Got News for You; especially the one with Nigel Farage who turned out to be as funny as the regulars who tried to score points off of him. Even if I didn't agree with his politics, which I do, I would have voted for him on the strength of that performance.

I find it's a simple choice. A life or preparing my own baked beans.

I think I'll be the lone assenting voice for male skin or hair care. I do all sorts of things to that effect which are best left unmentioned here. I don't, however, think that makeup will ever really take off for men.

I wouldn't go the extra mile for skin care, but I do blow dry my hair.
I've had baked beans from a tin (or can), but that was long ago.
Fullers ESB? The last beer I had was at a local brewery in Lake Bluff some time ago. I usually try the darkest one available with the most alcohol. It was pretty good.
Do people still watch TV?

I don't use any cosmetic products but my partner has an array of skin care products he uses. He's stopped using makeup but when he worked as an airline steward his superiors forced him to to cover acne scars.

Although I profess in company to grow old as disgracefully as possible, I do take my appearance in a blatantly vain manner.
Shower and shave daily, talcum powder down the Y fronts, beard trim every two weeks to stop looking like something out of the Old Testament, & manicure & pedicure once a month.
Perhaps its a reaction to working on muddy construction sites since 1965, in gear termed donkey jackets and Wellington boots?

You get a manicure and pedicure? I feel like I've done my duty by quickly clipping the fingernails when they get in the way of typing and the toenails when they threaten to damage the socks.

Do you like an eye-catching hairstyle like the popular Hollywood stars? Men are always looking to get the trendiest or coolest hairstyles, and most of them are willing to spend a fortune to make their hair look sharp. This is rightfully so because most people will naturally judge a man from the type of hair he wears, and so wearing a good hairstyle is not only necessary, but a must have for any man to be complete. There are many sexy hairstyles to choose from, but it is important to choose something that is suitable for your face shape, hair type and most importantly your personal preferences and tastes. {edit}

Historically, shampoo was considered too feminine for a man to use.
Historically, Mongolians didn't bathe at all because it was a sin to pollute water. Ghenghis Khan said something like that. Russian colonists were shocked at Mongolian hygiene when the started occupying their land.
Likewise, Tibetans don't traditionally bathe much at all. Having been in the Himalayas with only cold well water in freezing conditions I didn't bathe at all (the Tibetans and Indians did though).

Perhaps I've grown more narcissistic in my dotage:
1. Shower and shampoo every day. So would you after a hot, sweaty day in Vietnam.
2. Haircut, beard trim, shave, ear dewax, manicure & pedicure every two weeks ( Costs about 130,000 Dong / $3)
3. Full one hour body massage every two weeks. Feel like I've been worked over by Mike Tyson, but feel great three days later ( Costs about 200,000 dong / $4.5)
4. Eau Sauvage aftershave.
5. Johnsons baby powder down the Y fronts.
