Eight hours on a desolate stretch of highway 380, a rolling grain of sand plied its way west across the vast Llano Estacado eventually blowing into Roswell New Mexico. My son and I were headed to the mother ship for the UFO festival held over the July 4th weekend wondering if this could possibly top last year’s Texas Bigfoot Convention…

The “incident” occurred in July of 1947 followed by extraterrestrial furor that eventually subsided from the headlines, kind uh like my bowels after gorging on fast food tator-tots back in Throckmorton. Roswellians enjoyed a reprieve for about thirty years until Friedman came along, as in Stanton and today, well; even the street lamps have been abducted.

We were drawn to the UFO Festival like moths to a flame or better yet, like Patty Greer to Crop Circles. In addition to the normal 4th of July festivities celebrated across the country, Roswell’s 4th includes the migratory arrival of ET buffs, the abducted, “contactees”, lecturer’s, kooks and those like me who feed off the bizarre and take notes.
We attended four presentations by experts in the field of extra terrestrial phenomenon; David Marler Triangular UFO’s-An Estimate of the Situation, Frank Kimbler UFO Crash Artifacts Fact or Fiction and The Roswell Artifacts Update, Thomas Reed Reed Family Abduction and Patty Greer Crop Circles- What Are They Telling Us? (Apparently they told her a lot, this gal was out there!)

Mr. Marler opened with a brief update on Stanton Friedman, who had recently suffered from a heart attack, indicating that he is recovering well. Stanton was slated to attend this year’s event, but had to cancel due to afore mentioned malady. David indicated however, that Mr. Friedman expects to be back next year.
Mr. Marler is passionate about [UFO] archive preservation.
Ran through brief timeline of documented UFO and extra terrestrial events in the U.S.:
• 1953 First “contactee”
• 1957 First documented alien abduction
• 1961 Famous Hill abduction
• 1967 Cattle mutilations; “Lady the Horse”
• 1978 Crop Circles
• 1989 Triangular UFO’s
We’ve transitioned from your [grandpa’s] flying saucers to triangular UFO’s.
“The Belgian Wave” personal aside- let us pause a moment to consider the likely influence from the national drink
This coming fall, the Smithsonian Channel will present a documentary about the F-16 pilot encounter with a triangular UFO.
Examples of triangular UFO’s outside the U.S:
• Mid 1960’s newspaper headline from the U.K.; “Mystery Triangles Over North”
• 1957 Wave of triangular UFO’s over Denmark Aside-Sputnik anyone? Coupled with the northern lights and Akvavit
In some instances, could have been B-2 bomber
“MUFON” – (Mutual UFO Network)
“The Aurora Program”
Aside- at about this time wafts of rancid odor began drifting our way periodically. As it turned out, the odor was emanating from a plus size woman sitting next to me. The odor is best likened to the smell of a damp towel used to dry a wet dog in August, in Texas, wadded up and allowed to ferment in the dirty laundry pile.
