I HAVE TO WRITE A POETRY PAPER THAT SHOWS THE AUTHORS USE OF LITERARY AND POETIC DEVICES TO MAKE MEANING PLEASE HELP
Do You Think... By Robert Creeley

Do you think that if
you once do what you want
to do you will want not to do it.

Do you think that if
there’s an apple on the table
and somebody eats it, it
won’t be there anymore.

Do you think that if
two people are in love with one another,
one or the other has got to be
less in love than the other at
some point in the otherwise happy relationship.

Do you think that if
you once took a breath, you're by
that committed to taking the next one
and so on until the very process of
breathing's an endlessly expanding need
almost of its own necessity forever.

Do you think that if
no one knows then whatever
it is, no one will know and
that will be the case, like
they say, for an indefinite
period of time if such time
can have a qualification of such time.

Do you know anyone
really. Have you been, really,
much alone. Are you lonely,
now for example. Does anything
really matter to you, really, or
has anything mattered. Does each
thing tend to be there, and then not
to be there, just as if that were it.

Do you think that if
I said, I love you, or anyone
said it, or you did. Do you
think that if you had all
such decisions to make and could
make them. Do you think that
if you did. That you really
would have to think it all into
reality, that world, each time, new.

You're not asking for help, you're asking for someone to do your homework for you. Big difference. You're welcome to post what you write to get feedback and maybe further help if you have specific questions.

I'll give this a stab. Be warned I could be way off bass.

A rhetorical interrogatory with an expressed implication of "Do you think" is an implied center to the theme of the poem. The increasingly overbearing heavy hand of the interrogatory seems to beat the reader into submission rather than to allow the reader to find a deeper meaning within the poem itself. He's probably taunting the reader with literary philosophic undertones that he could care less about (or does he?)- and care even less if the reader took it seriously (perhaps). Is there a beat, a meter, or something else carrying the poem along ? A beginning/middle/end ? Turns ? Form ? Look at all the poetic devices one has to choose from and see what fits, if anything.

The poet often used sound, particularly jazz, rather than words as his poetic voice... one can almost hear a jazz device blaring; jumping up and down, all over the scale with a time more suited to music; rather than traditional meter and voice, especially as the poem progresses. I once wrote a poem to express my frustration with not being able to do just what poets like Creeley could accomplish:

Form

Form or formlessness
or form hidden unto itself;
if only I could write poetry
like jazz

My "young" inexperienced voice (I'm not speaking age here) is better suited to more traditional poetics. Again, one of my pieces (with apology to the formatting) as I recognize the traditional poetic "box" and acknowledge there is somuchmore - but I just can't escape it:

Poetry Is:

poetryisso
muchmore

Creeley's intimate and mature jazz knowledge allowed him to play or "noodle" with the spoken word sound and kick that ol' poetic box into submission IMHO.

Jazz scat singing comes closer to the jazz form sound; and Creeley tried, or accomplished, bridging jazz with the spoken word in a similar fashion (depending on your point of view).

This much one can find with the most cursory google exercise. Think about what I questioned earlier. There is more you can learn by listening to this piece and then answer his central theme in this one: "Do You Think" with nary a ?-mark anywhere. What do you think ?
