This is a book I read when I was very young. I think it's a children's book. It's about a boy who wakes up one morning to find that he has turned into a cat and how he learns to survive as a cat.
He lives with an old man who has something to do with Argentina and has geraniums in his window.Towards the end, as I remember, he falls in love with a female cat and fights for her with a battle-scarred veteran who has imposed a reign of terror over the territory. I can't remember whether he wins or not, but he is wounded and is dying when he suddenly turns into a boy.
The boy's name might be Eric or Edward, but maybe I've just mixed him up with the boy called Eric who turns into a dog, apparently because his sister wants a dog for a pet.
