A solemn book

with a transparent cover

baring the folio

of a solitary life

the binding thread-bare

smudges of dried glue

shackling the tattered leaves

a melancholy shroud, brown stencil

covering my graded days

rambling lines parade

on pages shaded gray

stained pen pricks of a heart

blipping without rhythm

forgotten green splotches

blades of virile youth

bleached by seething suns

leaving but indelible lines

to trace the carefree days

red ink blots clotting

with unrequited loves

tinges of purple shadow

days of wine and song

with undulating blue swells

to chart the blithe cadence

of so many, hopeful notes

spliced with short rests

the fleeting moments to caress

the short patches of blue sky

daubed with black clouds

dark ink tides that hover

around the faded dreams
