It was one of those normal nights. I could smell the alcohol reeking into the back of the truck.

“I can’t believe that a**h***!”

Immediately I wished to assuage my broken-hearted friend,

“He didn’t deserve you anyway.”

As an afterthought, while Stef who was also drunk, rattled on in consolation of Kelly.

“Have you been drinking?” The obvious yet obligatory question.

“Yes!” emphatic.

I slumped my shoulders meditating if I wanted to chide the girl who I not-so-secretly loved myself, but was ever doomed to the fate of friend zone. It was better that way, she was unstable and I was an anchor. I not only accepted it, I was grateful that I could fulfill that role.

The lights appeared suddenly from over the hill. They were on the wrong side of the road. A scream, she didn’t swerve but said “oh s***”, the sound of cars crashing in the distance. Kelly and Stefanie exchanged a few drunken words nonchalantly. My eyes peeled, as a stricken doe. I finally spoke,

“Shut our eyes!”

We were on the wrong side of the road.
