Max was bringing his spaceship down to land on the unknown planet. Technology had now become so advanced that hyper-speed, super-low-fuel-consumption spacecraft had been invented allowing space travel to further reaches than ever before. Max, just like the other 42 spaceships out there somewhere, was on an exploring mission. To discover intelligent life on another planet.

Max had stumbled upon this planet by chance. It looked like just another dry planet of rock and dirt, the third he would have found today, until he flew closer to the surface and noticed something he needed to take a closer look at.

The spaceship touched down close to what Max wanted to inspect and he hit the button to open the mechanised doors. He walked through them and onto the planets rocky, dusty surface below. As he continued walking he looked straight ahead at what he had spotted from his spaceship above. He saw what looked like old buildings. They were all crumbling apart and there was hardly anything left of them now. Max knew nothing could be alive here but he could hopefully find some useful information as to what may have lived here at some time.

Max stopped and focused his eyes. Something has moving just in front of the old buildings. The mysterious object started getting bigger and bigger. Max realised it was coming towards him. Max gripped the handle of his gun, ready. As the object got closer, Max realised it wasn't just one object, it was two. Then Max's jaw dropped as he finally realised what was coming his way. It couldn't be. It was impossible. But it was, two aliens.

Max could see them clearer now and he unholstered his gun. The aliens were running fast, probably twice the speed he could move. They seemed to almost glide over the surface. The aliens were similar in the fact that they had two legs and two arms but everything else was different. Their skin was a peculiar colour and despite their speed they were small, possibly half the size of Max. Their legs, arms and fingers seemed even smaller and completely out of proportion to their bodies. One of the strangest things Max noticed was that they had no eyes. How could they see? No, wait, they did have eyes, they were just so minute that Max could barely see them. And what was that on their heads? Max raised his gun and they stopped as they were a few meters away from him. They were unarmed.

The aliens started shouting at Max and were pointing behind them with their podgy, little fingers.
Their voices were very deep but Max had no idea what they were saying. The words that were coming out of their mouths were words he had never heard before. Some strange alien language. Max averted his eyes back to the buildings where the aliens were pointing. He could see a large cloud of smoke had formed in front of them and was slowly getting bigger. Max could just see what was causing the smoke. About 20 to 30 more running aliens, these however were armed. Some carried what looked like metal bars, some carved with a sharp edge. Others carried sticks with spikes on the end.

None of their weapons would match up to Max's gun, but having finally found intelligent life, the last thing he was going to do was start shooting at them. He holstered his gun. The two unarmed aliens were still pointing and shouting in their alien language so Max turned his back to them, pointed at his spaceship and started to run towards it in the hope that they would follow.

The aliens did follow, the only problem was, Max had completely forgotten about the speed of them. They soured past him as though they were on wheels. Max tried to catch up but they were too quick. They were going to get to the spaceship way before him. He fumbled for his gun as he ran but it was too late. The aliens were already through the doors before he got hold of it. They were going to steal his ship, he knew it, how could he be so stupid.

Max pushed himself harder and harder. The doors hadn't closed yet. He willed his legs to go even faster. Still, the doors were open. Max ran through them and saw the two aliens. They were just standing there waiting for Max, they had no intention of stealing his ship at all. As for the other aliens heading this way, that was probably another matter. He knew he had to be quick.

Max jumped into the ships controller chair and hit the button the close the ships doors. He turned the bottom thrusters up to medium so the ship sailed off the ground. As soon as it was at the correct height, Max turned the back thrusters to high and shut down the bottom thrusters. The spaceship zoomed away from the planet and Max was heading home. He had done it, he had dreamed on this moment since he was small. Of all the other ships out there, it was he, Max, who had discovered intelligent life on another planet. Not only had he discovered it, but he had two of the aliens on his ship with him. He was going to be famous. He was going to be very, very famous. A small smile formed on his face.

Max turned around to look at the two aliens. They were holding hands and looking out of the ships back window. Gazing at their planet as it got smaller and smaller and was finally gone.

“Well, goodbye planet Earth” said one of the aliens. “Yes, what's left of it” replied the other as Maxillaportruliamanopopator flew the ship back to his own plant. His friends called him Max for short.

cleverly done. I'm not usually a fan of science fiction and space travel, but I enjoyed this. I should have seen the twist coming at the end, but I didn't.
