The pigeon in the road
could have been
a late descendent
of a prehistoric bird;

somewhat flat,
like archaeopteryx
embedded in a rock,
but more colourful.

Perhaps a little wetter
and definitely redder
than one might have liked—
it looked a bit surprised.

I give it 31/2 stars, Hawkman. I like the juxtaposition of dry presentation crossed with the shock of sudden death.

Now is that thirty-one/thirty-two stars or three and a half? And anyway, out of how many? Yes, dry, but "wetter than one might have liked", but the suddenness of the death was crushing!

Thanks for reading ;)

I thought it was 31/2 stars.
All of the present day birds have descended from dinosaurs, correct?

qim: Well thanks for clearing that up :D Glad you enjoyed it.

Auntie: et tu amita? As for the dinosaurs; only the theropods count as ancestral birds. I can't quite imagine a brontosaurus ever getting airborne! Anyway, even if they did, one only has to look at their feet to realise they'd never manage to perch in trees ;)

Pleeeze tell me no bird was harmed in writing this poem!!!

Otherwise it's quite a unique piece, a few important points there, life and death going full circle back to the beginning… complete with dark humor that you do so well!

Haunted: We regret to inform you that the pigeon in question was definitely a victim of extreme violence - but not from me. I merely encountered it when crossing the road. Having imparted this tragic news I am relieved to see that you found it to your liking in a literary sense. Many thanks for reading and me pome and rescuing it from obscurity :D

face: Long time no see, and thanks to you too. Rest assured that I've pulled out of my dive :D
