I know that many people look at this play and say that it is sexist and about a minipulative man who forces a woman to marry him purely for her money. However we are looking at this play from the views of people in the 21st century: now it is unacceptable to treat a woman like this. But back then when this play was written Italy was a country full of devout catholics where divorce and suisde was a sure way to be banished to hell. At this time most marrages were arranged and they all worked. I think that we are being to hard on Petrusio he is a man with a sense of humor and he is incredibly clever. If he did not marry Katherina he would have it on his conscience because he knows he has the power to help someone and turn them from a 'shrew' into a 'God fearing' and 'pure' woman who is acceptable in socitiy. <br>having been in Katherinas shoes with a man chasing me and a man to have a passionate love-hate relationship with i know it can be hard but a least i did not have a boring sex life, he was unpredictable.
