Does anyone know of any poets who have crafted a Shakespearean sonnet? The closest I've ever come is E. E. Cummings (other than Shakespeare).

The Shakespearean sonnet wasn't even invented by Shakespeare; Wyatt brought the Italian sonnet to English and the Earl of Surrey gave it its familiar rhyme scheme and quatrain/quatrain/quatrain/couplet division. In general, most of the Elizabethan sonneteers (and there were many) used the "Shakespearean" sonnet in various forms. I'm sure if you picked up any sonnet anthology (and there are several) you'd find many examples both classic and modern.

I agree with MorpheusSandman. Many people have written Shakespearean sonnets. I suspect Edna St. Vincent Millay might have written some. I've even written a handful, not that I'm in her class. Writing that verse form is not my favorite thing to do, but it's not that hard once you get the sound of the meter right.

It's my understanding that the English sonnet preceded the Shakespearean sonnet, but Shakespeare perfected its form. There hasn't been any official change to the form since Shakespeare's poems.

I haven't discovered that many different versions of poems out there. The sonnet appears to be one of the most difficult to create.

I bought a book of sonnets that includes Petrarchan and Shakespearean sonnets. It's a nice demonstrative history. I found "Ozymandias" among them. Also, the line "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways?" is among them. I did not know it was from a sonnet.
